It can happen on your outer thighs, lower abdomen, buttocks, calf, arms etc. If there has been some major gain or loss of weight, it is a common thing for stretch marks to appear. These have no side effects but appear unattractive. They are usually long and thin and occur on the surface of your skin. TOP 10 WAYS TO HAVE BEAUTIFUL SKIN

While it is true that the aging process cannot be stopped, there are still many things we can do to delay and slow down aging. So no matter what age you are, let us learn how to have beautiful and healthy-looking skin.

Lisa Soberano's Photo

1. Avoid the sun -- Sunlight is the primary cause of wrinkles and aging. Thus, we should avoid the sun from 10 AM to 3 PM. Use a sunscreen daily that has at least an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30. It may seem that young people are immune to the deadly rays of the sun. However, be aware that the wrinkles and age spots will come out 15 to 20 years after sun exposure. Therefore, wear a hat, bring an umbrella, and avoid the sun.

2. Stop smoking and avoid alcohol -- Studies show that cigarette smoking can double the fine lines on your face. Smoking also decreases your cell's oxygen content and slows down the skin's ability to repair itself. Constant puffing will cause wrinkles to form around the mouth area. Similarly, alcohol can damage your blood vessels and dehydrate the skin. Heavy drinking can result in puffy and wrinkled skin, giving your skin a dull and lifeless look.

3. Be weather-conscious -- Skin can be damaged by very hot or very cold weather. Strong wind, dust and pollution cause wrinkles to form in your face. By all means, avoid riding a motorcycle because the wind, sun and dust will damage your beautiful skin.

4. Get enough sleep -- Sleeping and resting are the easiest way to boost your energies. At night, try to go for 8 hours of sleep. This will help your body regenerate and give you a vibrant-looking skin.

5. Limit stress -- Stress and too much work are factors that hasten the aging process. If you're a workaholic, it is possible that your calendar age is 40 years old, but you already have the arteries of a 55-year-old man. Conditions like diabetes and heart disease can age you faster than normal.

6. Clean your face -- After a long day, you should clean your skin thoroughly. My wife, Dr. Liza Ong, uses cotton balls dabbed in an alcohol-based astringent to clean her face. Cleaning the face will remove dirt, excess oil, make-up and dead skin cells.

7. Moisturize your skin -- After cleaning your face, you can use a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Moisturizer is especially helpful if you have dry, flaky skin. The cheeks and neck areas are the usual dry areas, while the eyebrows and nose area are the usual oily areas.

8. Be gentle -- When touching your face, like washing or applying creams and make-up, be sure to use gentle strokes. The skin around the eyes is particularly thin and prone to wrinkles. Use light, upward strokes, rather than dragging your skin downwards. As we age, the loss of skin elasticity and the pull of gravity cause our skin to sag.

9. Use clever make-up -- Choose make-up products containing UV filters and skin-nourishing ingredients. Use the latest light-reflecting kinds of foundations, concealers and powders. These products bounce off light and make your skin look younger and smoother.

10. Eat wisely -- Eat lots of colorful fruits, vegetables and salads. Choose high-fiber foods. Foods with vitamins A, C, and E are beneficial for the skin. Vitamin A, found in carrots and spinach, repairs skin tissues. Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits like orange and lemon, is used for collagen production and keeps the skin firm. Moreover, drink 8 to 10 glasses of water to keep your skin hydrated and firm.

Finally, it's wise to consult your dermatologist for your skin concerns. Good luck.

Beauty Habits You Should Be Doing Every Night

It turns out your body can do serious work for you while you sleep—you just have to give it a little help along the way. Try one or all of these treatments to wake up looking refreshed and gorgeous.

Photo: Getty

1) Remove your makeup—all of it. For real.

The most important thing to do to wake up looking fresh is to remove all of your makeup before bedtime, says Leslie Munsell, founder and owner of the beauty site, Beauty For Real.com. That means leftover mascara, lip color—everything. This ensures that your pores will be clean and your eyes free of leftover gunk.

2) Use two pillows

Prop your head up on an extra pillow to prevent puffiness. You can also prop up the head of your bed on 2- to 4-inch pieces of wood. “This is a time when gravity helps you with lymph and blood flow so fluids won’t accumulate under your eyes and in your face,” says celebrity makeup artist Dimitri James, founder of Skinn Cosmetics.

3) Do a spot treatment…with a purifying mask

You can use it to target acne and rosacea pimples, and leave it on overnight, says dermatologist Diane De Fiori, MD, who practices at the Rosacea Treatment Clinic in Melbourne, Australia. The extended skin contact time brings much better results.

4) Turn on a humidifier

A barrier repair moisturizer (containing ingredients such as ceramides and cholesterol) combined with an air humidifier in your bedroom produces durably hydrated, plump skin which is more resistant to irritants and allergens but also to appearing dry and fine-lined. By working on your skin’s hydration overnight, you can skip daytime moisturizer altogether or choose one that’s lighter since heavier moisturizers don’t tend to wear as well under sunscreen or makeup.

5) Go to town with hand cream

Moisturizing your hands with a thick, plain, somewhat greasy hand cream will keep your hands and fingernails looking their best first thing in the morning. “Hands get dried out throughout the day with exposure to dry air and excessive washing, and few of us apply hand cream with every water exposure as we should,” says board certified dermatologist Jessica Krant, MD, founder of Art of Dermatology. “Night is a chance to try to undo some of the damage, which will also keep cuticles and fingernails moisturized so they will grow longer and stronger and break and peel less.”

6) Sleep on a luxe pillowcase

Wash your hair with a silicone-free shampoo and use a silk pillowcase—sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase also helps your hair’s overall health. Fibers on most cotton pillows are rough against the hair cuticles. Don’t want to splurge on silk? Changing a cotton or linen pillowcase every one to two days can also bring an improvement.

7) Pin your hair back

Your hair contains oils and dirt that can get on your face and pillowcase and cause breakouts. Braid your hair or pin it up into a bun to keep it off your face as you sleep.

8) Get eight hours of sleep

Catching a good night’s sleep can really effect the way you look. “Sleep can reduce dark circles because a lack of sleep compromises your body’s circulatory system and you get stagnant blood in the vessels under the eyes because it hasn’t properly drained,” says celebrity esthetician RenĂ©e Rouleau. “Lack of sleep also causes your skin to look pale and tired because your circulation has been impaired.”

9) Try a leave-on exfoliator

“While you sleep, the skin is working its hardest to repair itself,” says Teresa Stenzel, the director of education for Bioelements. It’s the best time to apply leave-on exfoliators, to give the ingredients time to absorb and correct daily damage to the skin caused by UV exposure and environmental aggressors.

10) Use eye cream

No doubt you’ve heard it a million times, but eye cream is important. Start using great moisturizers and eye cream at night (even if you’re in your 20s). When the morning rolls around, your skin will be plump and hydrated.

Rosewater and Other Hydrosols

Hydrosols are floral waters that feel really refreshing when you spritz them on your body. They are also used in cooking, beauty products, and herbal medicine.

sustaincreateandflow.com

Jerica of Sustain, Create and Flow explains how she distilled a quart of rosewater using equipment everyone has in their kitchen. She walks you through each step and there are some helpful photographs. The process that produces the hydrosol is actually fascinating.

I was recently inspired by Mama Rosemary, (one of my favorite blogger-friends), to make my own hydrosols. In her blog post, she made it look so simple and easy, I thought, “why am I buying floral water (hydrosol) when it is so easy to make?” Using simple kitchen ingredients, I created my own still and made a refreshingly lovely rosewater. Any flowers or herbs can be used, and hydrosols serve many purposes. They are amazingly refreshing when spritzed straight onto the body, and also have many culinary uses, medicinal uses, and are a lovely ingredient in many body care products.

I usually buy my floral waters from Mountain Rose Herbs because they carry a high quality that I appreciate, and their website has a lot of great info on hydrosols:

Hydrosols, also known as floral waters, hydroflorates, flower waters or distillates are produced from steam-distilling plant materials. Hydrosols have similar properties to essential oils but are much less concentrated. Unlike their “essential oil added to water” counterparts, true steam-distilled hydrosols contain all the beneficial components that whole plant materials have to offer.
Hydrosols are usually a by-product of essential oil production, but the highest quality comes from devoted distillers who, with artist-like precision, steam small batches of fresh floral and plant material strictly to produce hydrosol… Hydrosols contain all of the essence of the plant in every drop, just like essential oils but in a milder form; making them suitable for all manner of applications where essential oils would be too strong. In most hydrosols there is less than 5% actual oil.

Now that I know how easy they are to make, I am excited to add hydrosols to my list of things I can make at home and no longer have to buy!

Using a pot, an inverted lid, a glass bowl, ice, and some big handfuls of fresh rose petals, I easily distilled a quart of rosewater.

First, I gathered some fresh roses from my mother’s garden. I used the petals of about one dozen.

Your source for roses is very important. If you don’t grow your own, you need to find some untreated roses. You don’t want to use store-bought, pesticide-laden roses. They will cause you more harm than good. Look around at a farmer’s market, or befriend your green-thumb neighbor In my town, there are many front-yard flower stands, and I’m bound to run across naturally grown roses eventually! It is also important to use highly fragrant roses, for they have the most medicinal qualities.

Next, I rinsed the petals, eliminating dirt and bugs from my plant material. I put my petals in the pot and filled it with water just covering all of the petals. I think I probably ended up filling my pot half-way with water.

I placed my (floating) glass bowl in the center of the pot and situated the petals around the outer rim of the pot. The glass bowl is what will catch my rose water as it condenses. If you don’t have a bowl that floats, it is recommended to use a fireplace brick, or pie pan, ceramic ramekin, or other heat-resistant item to place in the bottom of the pan to place your bowl on top of. You need to have your catchment bowl up out of the water of the pot to keep the condensation you are catching separate from the water that the rose petals are sitting in.

I then placed my lid upside down over the pot, so it is inverted. I turned my heat to low-medium-ish, (it is important not to boil the plant material), and placed some baggies filled with ice on top of the lid. Then the magic started to happen…

How exactly? Mama Rosemary explains quite well “how it works:”

The water will steam the plant material carrying all the goodness from the plant into the air. The steam collects on the lid of the pan and condenses due to the ice cubes. Because the pot lid is upside down, as the steam turns back into a liquid the liquid is directed to drip down into the smaller bowl. This liquid is your hydrosol! Pretty cool, uh?

Tip: I placed my ice in baggies because once it had melted I could grab the baggies (of now water), and quickly dump the water and replace it with more ice. Otherwise, you are lifting the lid off of your “still” and potentially losing some of your steam, (meaning rosewater). Otherwise, I have seen the water sucked from the lid using a turkey baster.

I steamed my petals until they paled and rosewater filled my inner glass bowl. The whole steaming process lasted about 25-30 minutes.

I allowed my rosewater to cool and transferred it to a mister bottle. To avoid spoilage, floral waters are best kept in the refridgerator.

We hope you enjoyed this post. Herbs and Oils Hub shares the best information we can find in the world of natural health remedies, beauty remedies, cleaning recipes and more.
