From traffic jams and manic school runs to desks overflowing or Instagram shoot stresses, everyone’s daily routine looks a little different. But there’s one little ingredient that each day should definitely involve - some all-important ‘me’ time.
Because it just doesn't seem that crucial, it can be so easily forgotten or overlooked, but (re)claiming your ‘me’ time could in fact be the difference between having a week that runs smoothly and one that ends in frazzled despair. The concept of ‘me’ time conjures up images of soaking in a candle-lit bath with wine glass in hand (yes, very nice!!) - but in reality it can take on many different forms.
If you are (or can force yourself to be) an early riser, some of the most successful people you can think of put a huge amount of emphasis on the importance of their early-morning routines (Tim Ferris, Oprah, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson – the list goes on). There is a great blog here on 10 common morning habits of super-successful women. If you think this can be you, I’d recommend reading the Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod for inspiration and starting steps.
But if your reality means you simply can’t find a way of adding in that extra block of time, there are always other opportunities to grab snippets of this special stuff at any point in your day.
But… how, what and where?
We’ve put together a handy list of ways you could weave ‘me’ time into your daily routine all throughout the day. See what you think could work for you:
When you first wake up, take a short time to breathe, meditate or pray to prepare yourself mentally for the day ahead.
Actually plan your day – and plan in some ‘me’ time. Sounds simple – but it’s way more likely to happen if you actually plan to do it. Use your Hello Day planner, plan your day the night before or early each morning. Or even better, plan your week on Sundays and schedule your ‘me’ time in every day.
Short on time? Jump up and do some stretches, exercises, or maybe a quick yoga flow, to energise your body.
Even better, squeeze in some exercise to get the blood flowing, whether it be an early morning gym trip, an evening fitness class, or a run. For me, a run is great to clear my head and the best time to think of new ideas or inspiration.
Stuck in traffic? Don’t let it boil your blood. Put on an audiobook, a podcast, or blast out your favourite album and sing at the top of your lungs. My current favourite listen is Melissa Ambrosini – ‘Mastering Your Mean Girl’ or any of her many Podcast episodes where she interviews successful people from around the world – a HUGE recommendation.
If you get the chance, pop out of your work environment during a break (especially on a stressful day) for a wander, some deep breaths of fresh air and lovely sunlight on your face. Work near home? Make the most of it and dash home to take the dog for a walk.
Pick a new meal to try from a cookery book or online, put some music on and immerse yourself in the chopping and peeling. My newest recommendation: Much More Veg by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
Before bed, grab your planner, some paper (or one of our gorgeous notepads) and note down some positive affirmations or little things you’re grateful for that day.
Everyone has different hobbies, passions or mindful activities that help them let go of negative thoughts, and focus on the present. Whether you love cooking, reading or sport (or all of the above!), find what works for you. By weaving little bits into your daily life, you can help your mindset to stay positive.
